Looking for a super simple dessert for your holiday spread? You’ve found it!

These chocolate rum balls are easily customizable with different toppings and will have everybody in great holiday cheer. Did I mention they have rum?!

These are no-bake treats, so the rum is very much active – be sure to give your guests a heads up and keep them away from the kiddos!

If you or your guests are avoiding alcohol for any reason, you can replace the rum with 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and 1/2 cup apple cider. The nonalcoholic version of these dessert balls is just as good!

These require just 7 ingredients – nilla wafers, powdered, sugar, cocoa powder, salt, spiced rum, honey and almond extract.

The topping ideas are endless – coconut flakes, sprinkles, crushed nuts, more cocoa powder or powdered sugar.

There is an organic nilla wafers option linked in the recipe suggested items, and you could also use shortbread cookies instead. I’ve also linked some dye-free natural sprinkle options!

Rum balls also are a great make-ahead dessert for a holiday gathering as they can be easily frozen in an airtight container for up to 6 months.

Hope you and your guests love them!

Prep Time 20 minutes
Additional Time 1 hour
Total Time 1 hour 20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 cups nilla wafers (roughly a 11-ounce package) - organic nilla wafers option linked below
  • ¾ cup powder sugar
  • 2 ½ tablespoons cocoa powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup spiced rum
  • 2 ½ tablespoons honey
  • ½ teaspoon almond extract
  • shredded coconut, sprinkles, more cocoa powder or powdered sugar: for topping

Instructions

  1. Pulverize the nilla wafers. In the bowl of a high-powered blender or food processor, pulverize the nilla wafers for 1-2 minutes until they resemble a sand like texture.
In a large bowl, add the nilla wafer crumbs, powdered sugar, cocoa powder, and salt and mix until well combined. There might be some larger crumbs and that is fine, they will all work themselves out and soak up flavor.
In the bowl with your dry ingredients, mix in the rum, honey, and almond extract. Mix well until you form a dough-like texture.
Scoop out about a tablespoon of dough and roll it into a 1-inch ball. Repeat this until all of the dough is used. Roll the balls in sprinkles, cocoa powder, or desired toppings and then set aside on a surface lined with parchment paper. Put in fridge to chill for at least 1 hour. This will allow them to harden slightly and also meld the flavors.
  2. Best served chilled!

Notes

To replace the rum for a non-alcohol version: use 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and 1/2 cup apple cider.
