This apple pie filling is really easy to throw together and you can even make it ahead of time.

Of course you can use this for actual apple pie, but there are many ways to use this! In cinnamon rolls, roll it up in a puff pastry like a turnover, and add it to breakfast foods like crepes or pancakes.

The options are endless!

We use 2 different kinds of apples in this recipe – Granny Smith and Honey Crisp. By using a sour apple and a sweet apple together, it adds more dimension to the flavor.

Apples, sugar, water and spices are all you need!

And then you’ll have a big bowl of apple pie filling to use in all your favorite recipes. Store in an airtight container or a mason jar in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

Ingredients

  • 3 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and diced
  • 3 Honey Crisp apples, peeled, cored and diced
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ¼ cup water
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon allspice
  • 1 ½ tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water

Instructions

  1. Add the diced apples, sugar, water, butter and spices (everything except the cornstarch + 2 tablespoons water) to a skillet over medium heat. Stir well to combine everything, then cover.
  2. Simmer on high for 10 minutes.
  3. Mix the cornstarch with the 2 tablespoons of water then pour into the apple mixture. Stir well.
  4. Cover again and simmer for another 5 minutes.
  5. Turn off the heat and allow to cool.
